National Convention Centre
Canberra, ACT
CONTRACT VALUE: $29M
The total refurbishment of the National Convention Centre commenced with the building being stripped back to a bare shell and all services and finishes restored to suit the centre’s current requirements. Works included total reconstruction of the kitchen to facilitate ‘cook-chill’ techniques, refurbishment of the Royal Theatre, 4 seminar theatres, several function rooms, main exhibition space and significant reconstruction and alterations to the main entrance. The external surrounds of the centre were also significantly upgraded to reflect the re-birthing of the National Convention Centre.
Involvement
As Project Manager to upgrade the existing National Convention Centre to current building standards and improve the utility of the facility for the Canberra Community. Iqon was responsible for the management of the design, construction and commissioning of the facility including a 5 level car park that remained operational throughout the construction works.
Added Value / Special Features
The program for the project was very tight and not subject to alteration as the total centre was closed down for a period of nine months. Hence bookings were being made on the basis that the centre would be ready for operation in October 2007 and this was achieved. The project was logistically difficult with the coordination of up to 250 tradesmen and materials handling constraints present right up until completion.
Major decanting of administrative functions was required for this project that required careful planning to ensure activities continued for the convention areas.
The overall project was delivered within budget with savings in excess of $3.7m realised.
