The Adult Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit located within the existing Campus of The Canberra Hospital in Garran, ACT is a project of high design and construction merit to ensure a safe and symbolic environment that is leading edge in the treatment of mental health patients.
On the ground floor level there is a 10 bed high dependency (HDU) wing, two low dependency (LDU) wings providing 30 beds, a central socialisation / living / dining spine, a therapies wing and support areas for track treatment, assessment , staff, visitors and reception. Open space to the west and south provides gardens, a sports court amphitheatre and walking track.
Staff offices and amenities are located on the upper level and this level is contiguous with the proposed elevated link (Hospital Street South) across Bateson Road to link with the New Southern Car Park.
The new AAMHIU project includes all associated external works, courtyards, boundary walls, fences, landscaping and car parking / civil works. All site building services are included within the scope, including but not limited to electrical services, communications, security, data, audio – visual and video conferencing, mechanical services, HVAC, BMS ,wet and dry fire services, hydraulic services, and natural gas.
The project was put through extensive value management to address a significant budget shortfall of $5m which was successfully managed by Iqon with all stakeholders in agreement and resulted in the project being completed within budget.
